2011, The Year Of Emotion

While last year I tackled my year-end round-up in a predictable manner, I decided that this year I’d skip the generic “My Favourite Games Were” lists (there’s enough of those already!), and instead focus on videogame experiences that left a lasting impression.

Bastion’s beauty, To The Moon’s heartfelt characters, and even Dark Souls’ dark, twisted hell make the list. What else? You’ll have to read on to find out.

If videogaming’s single goal was to allow me to escape from reality, then 2011 could be considered a success. I’ve flown choppers over war-torn battlefields. Raced cars against the best of them, and fought more dragons than an over-encumbered Dragonborn knows what to do with. As an escape, videogames have served me well.

Yet as I look back on 2011, it won’t be those experiences that linger with me as time passes. Even now it’s hard to distinguish one shooter from another. What game did I do that in? Does it really matter? No, it doesn’t – 2011, for me, is one I remember for something games have very rarely managed to achieve.
